non-music
Though I have a subscription music service, i spend most of my headphone time listening to audio of academics lecturing on a variety of topics. Following are some of my favorite sources of audio on the topics that interest me.
If you are interested in history, philosophy, or music, you should spend some time browsing at the teaching company. They travel around and record lectures from the top professors in the world and then sell them online. I generally watch ebay for anything from the teaching company, buy something i like, and then resell it after I’ve listened to it a couple of times. So far, I’ve listened to american religious history, the us economy in the 20th century, the great ideas of philosophy, augustine’s confessions, the old testament, philosophy of religion, and probably some others that I cannot recall.
If you are interested in theology, and don’t mind listening to people who come from an ultra-reformed perspective, check out covenant worldwide. They have every lecture and every outline from every course required for their MA in Theology degree available for free download. I’ve especially enjoyed the courses on history, and really have not listened to many of the others yet.
If you prefer a more anglican slant on theological concerns, check out the nt wright page, the learning church, and the bluffer’s guide series.
At some point I want to start checking out the various audio and video courses available on mit’s opencourseware, or the stuff on Princeton’s University Channel podcast, the 70+ courses available on the UC Berkley webcasts and a variety of educational audio indexed over at the Open Culture site.
